Host and Hostess Ministry History

Over 30 years ago the Hostess Ministry was formed, June 11, 1975, at the request of Metropolitan's then pastor, Rev. Dr. Earnest E. Drake*. Mrs. Ruth V. Banks* presided over the first meeting of which Mrs. Clovis A. Drake* was in attendance. Pastor Drake appointed Mrs. Margaret Coleman as the first president.

On Sunday, June 22, 1975 at 7:30p the first presentation introducing the Hostess Ministry was held. The ladies wore floor length elegant gowns. They hosted for the first annual Metropolitan Choir Concert. Pastor Drake delivered the initial sermon, "Let's Make a Deal". When serving for anniversaries or programs, three hostesses was the order: one for the door, one for the center aisle, and one for the pulpit. On Sundays, to welcome the visitors, the hostess in the middle would be the spokesperson. Pastor Drake took pride in the Hostess Ministry because they displayed poise and grace.

The original members were Mrs. Margaret Coleman, President, Mrs. Maria Coleman*, Mrs. Mary Coleman, Mrs. Catherine Dupree, Mrs. Vella Nelson, Mrs. Anna Belle Newsome, Mrs. France Polite, and Mrs. Zola Quarterman.

The committee grew over the years with members that wanted to serve the Lord with Gladness.

Past presidents include: Mrs. Mary Coleman, Rev. Marjorie Sims, Mrs. Wylie Rogers, Bro. Donrell Gates (set tone for name change to the Host and Hostess Ministry), Mrs. Sara Eaton-Coleman, Ms. Subrena Robinson, Ms. Ann Martin, Mrs. Marchell Hough, Mrs. Valerie Smith-Butler, Mrs. Pearlie Price (current)

Our service has been rewarding in the sight of God. We take great pride when we "Know the Visitors".

At the present time, the Host and Hostess Ministry consists of 19 faithful members. It is the unconditional love and commitment to WELCOME and extend a cordial greeting to our visitors…

With this in mind we the Host and Hostess Ministry thank God for our place in His vineyard.
